Here's a sneak peak of a few images featured on the cover of a new title in the Explore Series I'm working on with Nomad Press. I find Native American culture fascinating and I'm very excited to be working on a book to help educate kids about it!

This work is a little different than my normal color work due to the requirements of the series, but it was fun to experiment more with digital illustration!

Goodbye 2011: The Year of the Sketchbook

Saying goodbye to 2011 I thought I'd take a moment to reflect upon the artist's diary: The Sketchbook! One thing I tried to do this year was always have a sketchbook with me to enhance my life drawing. I know a lot of artists have that one special book that goes with them everywhere. I do love shopping, so I'm always a sucker for a new sketchbook. It's one of my favorite accessories! So... I have A LOT of different books that I trade in and out with me depending on where I'm going, what I'm doing, and of course, what bag I'm carrying.

When I travel for specific sketch trips (like the zoo or nature centers) I have a little bag with a lot of different medium ranging from watercolor pencils, to pens, to a variety of pencils. However in my everyday purses I try to limit those pieces in order to save room, and also to challenge myself. I thought it would be fun to reflect upon my "year of life drawing" beyond the exotic animals I tend to post, and just take a small peak at the everyday life sketches I've gathered. (Remember - to see the sketchbook sample pages larger click on them! You can even enlarge them more with the magnify glass tool if it's available!)

I love to look at people and try to sneak a peak at who they are, what they're doing and where they are. This is tricky because those pesky buggers tend to move as much as the animals! Especially if they feel like you are looking at them. I like using the micron pen for people because I can get an impression really quickly, and work on my stylization as well. I also like wearing sunglasses because then you can't tell that I'm staring at you! (mwah ha ha!)

The one thing I don't do a lot, but I am trying to get better at, is sketching environments & scenery. I'm finding that an environment can tell a story just as well and the characters in it. I have no real medium preference for this, but this year I tended to lean towards pen & marker a little more (again - light and small and easy to take to the park) Here's a small sample of a few environments that made impressions on me this year.

Last (but never least) are my animals. Outside of the zoo, I'm left to render and work on my two favorite animals - dogs and horses. I've starting to take up riding again, and I realized that just like practicing my posting and cantering, in order to be good at drawing horses I needed to practice drawing them as well! Nothing beats observing and drawing from life when it comes to this. And dogs, well... I can never get tired of drawing those guys. My final farewell to 2011 I leave you with a sampling of the domesticated animals roaming in my sketchbook.

My horse character was so moved by the farm dog bringing a carrot to him, that he had to reciprocate the act. (Or perhaps I fell so madly in love with these new characters in my head that I couldn't leave them for one illustration alone!)

Here's hoping everyone has a wonderful holiday season with an endless supply of tennis balls, carrots, and love for all the characters in your heads and in your lives. :-)

JenKellerArt Cards: Open for Business!

I'm happy to announce the re-opening of my Etsy Shop and introducing my first set of Holiday Cards for sale! Last year, my holiday promotional postcard got such a positive reaction from dog lovers, I decided to create two different cards stemming from the artwork.

My first card features the Canine Carolers! This is a full color greeting card with a simple but fun greeting inside (Happy Howl-i-days!). Some of my "fans" might recognize a few of those canine faces!

The second card is a smaller and a more simple card. Designed to be a little more subdued, it's printed on textured heavyweight paper to echo the graphite sketch feel of the artwork. This one also has a special greeting on the inside! I think it would be a great little gift card for your canine's holiday presents or the dog lover in the family.

If you live in the Bay Area, some of these cards will also be for sale at the Palo Alto Humane Society's Art Gallery in Menlo Park (Peninsula/South Bay) and at Dog Bone Alley Pet Boutique in Alameda (East Bay). Goodbye to Bella

It is with heavy heart that I bring this news. One of my favorite muses, the story of Bella and Tarra, has come to a tragic end.

A little over a year ago I was searching high and low for inspiration for The Peace Project hosted by The Whole 9 Art Gallery in LA. I had no desire to depict something traditional or ordinary, and then I found Bella and Tarra - The Animal Odd Couple. Tarra the elephant and Bella the dog, had somehow found each other. Despite all of their differences, they became the best of friends. So much so, that when Bella become sick, Tarra held vigil outside of the clinic waiting for her return.

About a week or so ago, the staff at the Elephant Sanctuary noticed they hadn't seen Bella for a while, and Tarra had been acting strangely. After further inspection they tragically found Bella's body, most likely attacked by coyotes.

After studying these two extensively for my illustration, and checking in on them every so often on the Elephant Sanctuary's Elecam... my heart is heavy to know that Bella will be no more.

The most amazing part of the story is that they did not find Bella where she actually died. Tarra is thought to have lifted her little body and carried her away from the site, trying to care for her friend one last time. I can only hope that Bella passed on curled up in the trunk of her best friend.

It seems that the other elephants at the sanctuary are standing by Tarra and helping her with her grief. They are sharing their meals with her and keeping her company. These creatures are so amazing, to think that they are anything less than loving, feeling creatures with relationships similar to our own, would be wrong.

I know that even though Bella is no longer with us, her relationship with Tarra and their message of Peace will live on.

A Carrot for You!

I was recently asked to do this year's Holiday Greeting Card for the Palo Alto Humane Society. As everyone knows, humane and ethical treatment of animals is a passion of mine and being able to use my skills in order to help my furry friends was an absolute joy!

Being a rescue animal theme, I based these particular animals on the pets from my childhood (all rescued from shelters or from the street) and few from the present!

PAHS assists in rescuing animals including dogs, cats, horses, birds & bunnies. I wanted to include as many of these animals as possible in a classic winter scene. I am always fascinated with inter species relationships and I was thrilled to find numerous photographs of horses paling around with both dogs and cats! I've seen horses on numerous occasions nuzzle the barn cats here in California and the dogs interacting with the horses I used to work with in Illinois. Animals are so great at looking past their own differences, too bad we humans can't always do the same.

Illustrators' Gift for Illustrator Day!

It's all about the illustrators!

This year was the fifth annual Illustrator Day hosted by the SCBWI San Francisco South Chapter. At so many conferences, the emphasis is put on the writers (which isn't bad since they outnumber the illustrators by around 10 to 1) but admittedly sometimes we feel a little short changed. Hence: ILLUSTRATOR DAY!!

This year was fantastic! From speakers like Joann Hill, Art Director of Disney-Hyperion to Agent Linda Pratt with the Wernick & Pratt Agency, to the Illustrator Andrew Glass and Illustrator/Art Instructor at San Jose State, John Clapp... my brain was completely full by the end of the day!

This year was pretty special because our Regional Advisor had something super special planned for our Illustration Coordinator, Lea Lyon. For the past five years she has been organizing and putting together this fabulous day exclusively dedicated to the illustrator and to thank her for her hard work we all plotted to put together a wonderful piece of art!

SCBWI has been an incredible resource for me and I was more than happy to contribute this small part to show my appreciation. Plus I got to play with watercolors again and experiment with my new fancy printer! I printed out my drawing onto a lightweight soft-press watercolor paper and created a woodland letter "N"!

It was really fun to create this little piece. I used some of the more stylized drawing I had refined in the recent activity books I did but combined it with a more traditional style of watercolor painting and a little colored pencil.

I think it turned out pretty fun - I hope Lea enjoys it!!

"Drawing" to a Close - Sketchbook Project Tour

So after 10 US cities, 7 months, and countless miles, The Sketchbook Project is now drawing to a close.

I am so glad I participated in this National Phenomenon. Not only did the actual process of making the sketchbook force me to open up, use my imagination and have fun putting it all together, but watching my book travel all over the country was a great thing to see!

I had so many friends and strangers pull out my little Storybook Sketchbook. Hopefully it all gave them a quick laugh and brightened their day a bit. (Honestly, I don't know whose mood wouldn't improve with the sight of giant cupcakes and glitter.)

Weekend of a Lifetime!

So this past weekend I was able to travel to Los Angeles for the 40th annual National Conference for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. And BOY - was it a conference!! I left full of information and inspiration...

Among the numerous and talented authors and illustrators that were there, legends walked all around. I was inspired by Jerry Pinkney (2010 Caldecott Medal Recipient & 5-time Caldecott Honor Recipient), moved by David Small (Caldecott Medal & Honor Recipient), laughed with John Scieszka, amazed by Gary Paulsen (3-time Newberry Honor Recipient), and my breath was taken away by Richard Peck (Newberry Medal Recipient). Within all of this great talent was a surprise visit from the Queen of Children's Literature - Judy Blume!!

It was an amazing weekend filled with great speeches, good information, and a few fun gatherings including a big party on Saturday night with dinner and dancing...

...plus a lovely lunch on Sunday where we had the best dessert - a Chocolate Mousse treat in the shape of a book!

Monday, however, contained the best treat of all. This year the SCBWI added the "Illustrators Intensive." And it was INTENSE! We had the privilage of observing demonstrations by 7 amazing and award winning illustrators. We started in the morning with Paul O. Zelinsky showing us his oil/watercolor technique. I found this particularly fascinating and it got me thinking of playing a little bit more with my medium.

Next we observed the great Marla Frazee with her delicate and precise watercolor/gauche/prismacolor technique. I learned how to breathe a little more, and how important developing those characters are.

After Marla, we embarked on a journey with Richard Jesse Watson. I also was able to receive a great one-on-one portfolio review with him - so lucky! He demonstrated a really cool egg tempera technique along with some gold leafing. I loved that he was messy like me!!

Next we observed Kadir Nelson doing a classic oil painting. His energy was absolutely calming and kind. His work was just beautiful.

Then we had lunch (whew!)

After lunch, we were delighted by Denise Fleming and her pulp painting technique. I was thrilled to see another messy artist! (yeah!). Her humor and uplifting spirit really shows in her her work. The complexity and discipline that this process involves was amazing. At the end, her work looks fresh and lively - like a breath of fresh air.

David Small gave our next demonstration, doing gesture drawings, a self portrait, a pen & ink sample, and rounding it off with some sketchbook work. I was blown away at his speed and control - resulting in beautiful work.

Last but certainly not least - was Jerry Pinkney.... and wow. We watched him paint a beautiful watercolor of a turkey vulture as if he were tying his shoes. I was mesmerized by what seemed to be an effortless technique but knowing that every decision he made was precise and carefully executed. Just great.

At the end of it all, there was a panel discussion with all of the artists at once.

So much information & inspiration!! Here are a few bits of what I learned...

Sketchbook, sketchbook, sketchbook
Find your identity
You are your own best publicist
Play
It's not the technique, it's how you use it
Voice is a part of you and only you can find it and release it

Of course these are all mere snippets of the advice that was flying around the room. But what an amazing weekend! I went to LA a little tired & burnt out, but now I've returned recharged and ready to go! I'm excited to put all of this advice to work and dive into painting, creating, and playing again. :-)

Science Coloring Books - Finito!

So after 72 drawings, 72 inks, and 72 digital enchantments - plus 3 full color paintings and digital enhancements - my coloring book project is complete and on its way to being published!

This process and style isn't like anything I've done in the past, and I'm really excited that I had the opportunity to explore this venue. With most of my monochromatic work done in graphite with tone, I'm happy to report that through many trials, errors, numerous conversations and advice from my peers, I was able to establish a strong line-work style. Here's a little sample of "What are the Seasons?" section on Fall showing the three step process I used to create the line work.

The books should be out in the fall, and you can check the publisher's website, BooksbyKathe, for updates on its status. They are great activity books and I have to say that I even learned things (especially about volcanos!) that I might not have known before.

Lincoln Park Zoo - Sweet Home Chicago!

This past week I was lucky enough to get to go home to my old stomping grounds - Chicago!! The weather was perfect the entire week (which if you know anything about Chicago - you know how rare that is!) and I had a great visit with family and friends. This trip couldn't be complete without a drawing session at one my favorite places - The Lincoln Park Zoo.

My first stop was at the Gray Seal exhibit. I love watching these guys during the feeding session! They flop themselves up onto the rocks, fetch rings, and open their mouths in the cutest way so the handlers can check their teeth! Being seals, these guys weren't as agile on land as the Sea Lions I saw in New York, but they were just as great.

Next stop was at the Beaver tank - what a guy! He just swam & swam all over the place. Bobbing his head up above the water then diving down deep to the bottom of the tank. I had no idea Beavers were such great swimmers!

After the beaver tank, it was time to visit the big cats. This is one of my favorite things to do at any zoo, and Lincoln Park is no exception. I love the Lion House so much I had my wedding photos taken there! Inside the Big Cat Exhibit I was able to sneak drawings of the Ocelot and the Eurasian Lynx. Generally I haven't been able to see these amazing cats up close but at Lincoln Park they were in plain sight.

However, outside was the most incredible site. The Lions were napping right in front of the viewing glass! It is incredible to be so close to these amazing creatures. The female was only about 2 feet from me! Thank goodness for that glass, otherwise one of us might have made a tasty snack!

In addition to all of these great mammals, this zoo has a great Birds of Prey Exhibit. I was in awe of the majestic Bald Eagle. One of the poor guys had a damaged wing, so the zoo seemed like a perfect fit for him.

I also spent time with the beautiful Snowy Owl. I think that these birds are so gorgeous, I can see why Harry Potty loved Hedwig so much!

Around the corner from the Birds was the White Rhinoceros Exhibit. I don't think I've ever seen so many white rhinos in one place! They had at least 4 of them, and they were all very active walking around their habitat, eating shrubs, etc. One of them had a little rabbit as company and another was playing with a little plastic barrel he had with him. He tossed it up on his horns and flung it down again. He seemed to be having a good old time!

Last but not least was my FAVORITE exhibit - The Wolves! I have yet to see a wolf exhibit at any of the zoos I've visited and this one is particularly fantastic. They have a pretty decent range to run around in and the fencing is fairly open so they are easy to spot. I stood there for at least an hour, sketching and observing. They are so fast and elegant!! There are anywhere from 5-8 wolves at a time, and many of them are relocated into the wild. As of 1980 this particular wolf breed (Red Wolf, a close relative to the much larger Gray Wolf) was completely extinct in the wild. Currently there are 300 Red Wolves in North America and only about 100 or so of those are in the wild. Here's hoping for more in the near future.

School's Out for Summer!

I ended another great session with my Young Rembrandt art students a few weeks ago. During the spring we switched gears and did a class in cartooning! This proved to be really fun and challenging for the students. In addition to the traditional Young Rembrandt lessons in shape construction and composition, the kids learned about stylizing figures/objects and seqeuntial art. There was a lot of talk about Snoopy, Calvin & Hobbs, and many other classic cartoon characters. Especially with this sequential piece of a boy trying to fly a kite (and the kite ends up flying him!)

We drew everything from figures to animals to personified food! I think the kids had a really good time with it all. Below are samples from our "crazy ice cream" characters!

I even have a group of 3 sisters who had taken or were currently taking my classes who put together a "gallery" around their white board at home!! So fabulous!

I also was so lucky to receive special gifts from a few students including a lovely letter from a kindergardener and a beautiful refrigerator quality drawing from one of my 1st graders. I was so thrilled that these students were moved beyond the class time to do something more...!

For our last class we fittingly drew a family packing for vacation - with the dog accidently packed with the luggage! I had such a great time working with these kids this year. And everything people say about working with kids is true. It's rewarding, inspiring, and moving. Helping to mold the future artists of america could be one of the best things I've ever done. :-)

Summer Fever!

As I come to the end of working on my coloring book series (finishing all 72 tight pencils and starting the inking process), and my elementary art classes drawing to a close, I feel the fever of summer brewing. I remember that itchy feeling of wanting to be outside, running in the grass with my barefeet, and how this season seemed to happen way too fast. To celebrate this time of year (and finishing all of drawings) here are a few tight pencils from "the weather" book. Enjoy!

The Little Mermaid

At last she reached her fifteenth year. “Well, now, you are grown up,” said the old dowager, her grandmother; “so you must let me adorn you like your other sisters;” and she placed a wreath of white lilies in her hair, and every flower leaf was half a pearl. Then the old lady ordered eight great oysters to attach themselves to the tail of the princess to show her high rank.

“But they hurt me so,” said the little mermaid.

“Pride must suffer pain,” replied the old lady. Oh, how gladly she would have shaken off all this grandeur, and laid aside the heavy wreath! The red flowers in her own garden would have suited her much better, but she could not help herself: so she said, “Farewell,” and rose as lightly as a bubble to the surface of the water.

I love re-inventing these old stories. Originally I had designed this composition digitally and have always wanted to attack it in a traditional format. With my trip to New York coming up shortly it was the perfect excuse to create something new for my portfolio. Enjoy.

Learning about Clouds

Future Artists of America

As many of you know, one of my "extra-curricular" activities is teaching drawing in an after school program with The Young Rembrandts for students K-5. This past session I was lucky enough to teach two different classes at Encinal Elementary School with an amazing group kids.

From the get-go these kids all took to the program like honeybees to a flower and each week I was amazed at how their work improved and how they absorbed the knowledge I was giving them. I even had one student win the local Trader Joe's coloring contest with the techniques she was taught in class and had another student from a different class have his work featured on the company's newsletter (see below!)

As a young artist I was constantly enrolled in summer art programs, but we never had any programs going on during the school year. It's so great to be able to provide outlets for creative kids all year round.

Every week we had a different subject, and the kids worked through their drawings step-by-step learning how simple shapes can fit together to make much more complex compositions. I still do this! I loved seeing each child individualize their work, making each drawing a special part of who they are. At the end of the lesson students had the option of turning in their work to be posted in the office. It was great to see all of the work together and this cowboy boot project in particular showed off everybody's personality and style.

Our particular region has it's own facebook page with photo albums of the student's work. I had so many students submit their work it took up two different albums! Check out both the Winter Session and the Spring Session to see more student drawings.

Here's to the future artists of America! Our last project we studied Frank Lloyd Wright and his geometric patterned stain glass windows. Here's what a few of the kids came up with!*

Thinking of Japan

Originally I had planned on working up a post about the new work I've been doing and then the Japan Tsunami happened and I felt like I just needed to address this major catastrophe and the question: What can I do to help?

After much research and a shout out to Ripple Blog Founder, Kelly Light, I found plenty of options for both artists and art appreciators. Art for Japan is taking donations of artwork, prints, books, sculpture, or any other piece that could be sellable in order to raise money for a variety of charities set up to help Japan. On Illustration Rally they have several options set up including an online digital gallery, art donations for auction, and an Etsy Shop with all sales going towards tsunami relief. Artists Help Japan has a blog set up with announcements about different grassroots events happening throughout the U.S., including their own. On Design Taxi a charity has been set up in order to help creatives in both Japan and Christchurch.

Last but certainly not least, for the animal lovers our there, Dog Art Today asked its readers to make a donation to World Vets, a non-government foundation dedicated to rescuing animals in need around the world.

I hope some of you find this information helpful and are able to participate in one of the activities going on. I found it serendipitous that I was working on this piece featuring Mt. Fuji for a coloring/activity book about volcanos during the same night the tsunami hit. I'm hoping to give it a life beyond the book and help out in the small way that I can.

Playing Dress Up!

After donating a piece of work to Hello Bully for their art show fundraiser this past weekend I felt inspired to create a illustration showing the true nature of this misunderstood breed. I already had a "dress-up" image in mind that I wanted to do and now the breed was set. It saddened me so much while doing visual research the horrible images that would pop up of these dogs - and it's no wonder they are so abused, overbred, and mistreated. My response...

Meet Petunia the Pit Bull and her little girl Patty! Like Ferdinand the Bull, Petunia would much rather play dress-up and have tea parties with her little girl, than be thrown into the ring and forced to fight. Her favorite food is a mixture of tea cakes and steak but she's not very picky. She loves to romp with Patty in the fields and try to make new friends (though she can be a bit overzealous) and napping on the plush "throne" together (or as we like to call it - the sofa)...

Recently I was contacted by Hello Bully in order to donate work for their Lovers Not Fighters Gala Benefit. Hello Bully is a Bully Breed Rescue Organization located in Pittsburgh. The mission of Hello Bully was described perfectly to me by their Gala Artwork Coordinator, Shiri Ransley...

The goal of Hello Bully is to keep the American Pit Bull Terrier out of shelters. We educate the community about the breed, and work with foster dogs to make them candidates for adoption in loving, responsible homes. We offer free or low cost training consultations and free/low cost spay and neuter...

Most recently, we have been asked to work with the Humane Society of the United States, with their agents that investigate dog fighting. Our most recent rescue mission with them was in Ohio, where they uncovered a very large fighting ring/breeding operation. Our volunteers worked for 2 month setting up their temporary shelter, and then staying on to care for 80+ Pit Bulls that were confiscated.

I didn't have to think very hard about supporting such an outstanding organization. As an animal lover and animal rights advocate - donating a signed & framed print was the least I could do.

Unfortunately there wasn't enough time to make a new Pit Bull focused illustration, but Shiri pointed out that many of the patrons will own other breeds besides Pit Bulls. I thought my "Eat Dessert First" piece might make the perfect addition to someone's home. Hopefully there's a hound dog fan at the benefit!

If you know anybody who lives in the Pittsburgh area, I would definitely suggest attending this benefit. It sounds amazing and these dogs deserve every break they can get!

January 15th finally came & it was time to send in my sketchbook for the Art House Co-op/Brooklyn Art Library's Sketchbook Project!

It took me a while to figure out what exactly I was going to do with my book, and then to shut off the logic and let my creative side take over. So in keeping with my original concept - No research, No rules, No sources - only PURE IMAGINATION - I just let go and made it up as I went along...

Something really exciting happened - I had FUN! Once I was able to turn off the years of schooling and "unlearn what I had learned" the book took shape.

My early influences like Monty Python, Jon Waters, and Tim Burton seem to come out in my loose story arc and new stylized style. In many ways, this piece seems to be more "me" than a lot of other work I've done.

I hope everyone can make it out to The Tour. Starting at the Brooklyn Art Museum on February 19th and traveling the U.S. until the end of July... My sketchbook is going places!

Society of Illustrators - Sketch Night

During my visit to the Society of Illustrators in New York I discovered their weekly sketch night. I couldn't resist this opportunity to draw in the hallowed halls of so many illustrators before me. It was a "must-do" event.

To my delight the atmosphere was more than welcoming. The room was filled with great works of art dating from the "Golden Age of Illustration." Classic work from the 30's and 40's, dating up to the early 60's. I have been in love with work from this era long before my illustration days, going back to my former life as a costume designer. I was thrilled to just be surrounded by it!

In addition to this, the society also had a great old bar with cocktails to help you relax before you pick up your pencils (or during). They also had live music playing during the drawing sessions, and this week the models were dressed in fabulous 40's style garb. In addition to my new hand made sketch pad featuring classic illustration, it was perfecition!

Three hours seemed way too short to me, but I managed to crank out a few fun sketches during the 20 minute poses. Enjoy!

Society of Illustrators - Original Art Show

This past week I was lucky enough to be in New York for the Society of Illustrators Original Art Show. This show in particular was focused on Children's Book Art.

The society hosted two floors of artwork produced by current and classic illustrators at the top of their game. I was overwhelmed and inspired to be surrounded by such great work.

Included in the show were works by a few of my favorites like Amy June Bates, Peter Brown, Raul Colon, Ian Falconer, Marla Frazee, Emily Gravett, Brian Lies, C.F.Payne, David Soman, and David Santat... among so many amazing artists.

I felt really fortunate to have coincidently planned my trip at the same as the show. It was the spiritual push forward at the perfect time.

Dog Star Resort!

So here is the final image for the Dog Star Resort, LLC, a premiere Doggy Daycare and Boarding facility in Central Wisconsin. This image was so much fun to create. The dogs are loosely based on the two of the owner's dogs...

Dog Star Resort, LLC is not set to open for awhile, but you can check out their progress on their Facebook Page until they get a website set up. Carol is a fantastic dog owner and caregiver with numerous years of experience with rescue dogs (including my own!) I have no doubt this will be an excellent facility to take your canine companions.

Purrcasso Art Gala & Benefit

I am so happy to be participating in the Purrcasso Art Show in Berkeley for my third year. This time around I've donated a signed print of my modern "The Cheshire Cat and Alice"

After the devastating fire the Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society suffered from this year, donating this small piece is the least I could do. I hope the profits it brings will help out in some way!

The benefit is a two day event, November 6-7th at 2865 Seventh Street (at Heinz) and I hope some of those kitty lovers out there make a stop and buy some art!

The Charlie Man

I'm so excited to be working on this illustrative commissioned portrait of one of my favorite guys, Charlie! I just finished this line drawing and I'm excited to move on to the final piece.

Charlie is a rescued yellow lab and loved by two wonderful people who currently reside in San Diego. Charlie is not only an awesome dog -- he is a celebrity! For my inspiration Alex (Charlie's dad) sent me a series of fabulous photographs that were featured in The Popular Dog Series Magazine : Labrador Retrievers. He made the cover!

The great thing is that Charlie never let his celebrity status go to his head. Well, maybe only when he's asking for a belly rub...

The Little Red Schoolhouse

A recent visit back home brought to me to one of my fondest childhood places, The Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center. Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, this little nature center plopped in the middle of the southwest forest preserves was a favorite place of mine. Of course when I used to visit as a child, you could still feed the ducks breadcrumbs or corn from a gumball machine. But you had to be careful in the fall and winter because you might get accosted by hungry geese!

Well, a lot has changed since then, and now there is an entirely new nature center with bigger and better exhibits featuring wildlife native to the mid-west, numerous footpaths around the property, and the schoolhouse is, of course, still standing. You cannot feed the wildlife anymore, however, which is probably for the best!

Along one of these paths I happened upon a fairly calm goose (compared to the ones of my youth) and took this opportunity to work on my bird renderings. I feel like he knew he was being watched...!

All of the animals in the exhibits at the schoolhouse are generally rehabilitated wildlife that for one reason or another, cannot return back to the wild. In the back of the property are some rescued birds of prey. The two owls were hiding out, being nocturnal creatures. However, the beautiful red tailed hawk was bright eyed and on the lookout for a spare rodent/snack. Not sure if he ever got that snack, but I got a decent sketch of him.

It was great to return to my home in the plains, and experience the beauty of the mid-west. I hope to go back again soon!

Eat Dessert First!

I think every dog lives by this rule... (or eat whatever is in front of you!) This scenario is based on a million stories I've heard (and seen) about dogs helping themselves to yummy goodies whenever they have a chance. Here's hoping someone catches Fido before the birthday party is in shambles!

Inter-species Peace: Bella & Tarra

The Whole 9 Gallery has been sponsoring, The Peace Project, a gallery show based on the concept of Peace. It's opening will be in Culver City, CA on World Peace Day in September.

I’ve been wanting to submit something to this project for awhile, and as I thumbed through all of the beautiful traditional imagery of doves, globes, people holding hands, etc… I couldn’t help but think there has got to be something else just as symbolic and meaningful, but would speak to me as an artist and a human being. Then I saw the special on Bella & Tarra. I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

I was so moved and touched by this story, I just had to depict these two characters - Peace Project or no Project... I really didn't care. Everyone knows my deep love and affection for the animal world, and this story seemed to seal the deal. I was so moved that I just had to depict it visually.

I look at these animals, and see so many differences – Carnivore vs. Vegetarian, Canine vs. Pachyderm, 8,000 lbs vs. 40 lbs… the list goes on. I wanted to capture the simplicity of their relationship. The giant stature of the elephant bursting outside of the frame, and the small bright-eyed pooch snuggled in her trunk.

The story originally aired in January of 2009 (somehow I missed it!) but Bella and Tarra are still going strong. If you are lucky you may see a glipse of them on the live ELECAM at the Elephant Sanctuary website.

So my idea of Peace and Harmony? Well, I think you just need to look at this "Animal Odd Couple" to know...

Illustration Friday - ATMOSPHERE

The couple decided that Mattie shouldn't live inside the house anymore. They put her outside with a big bowl of food and a big bowl of water. She was so scared. All alone.

Another oldie, but goodie... "Mattie Forgotten Outside" or "All Alone." I've gotten a lot of positive feedback on this piece lately on my Whole 9 Portfolio and I thought it captured a sense of the word "atmosphere" featured this week on Illustration Friday.

The San Diego Zoo

This past week I was lucky enough to travel to Southern California and visit the famous San Diego Zoo! It was great. There were so many animals waiting to be captured in my sketchbook.... I think I even salivated a little bit upon arrival :-)

The Koala Bears were my first subject. I have never seen a Koala live - and you might actually mistake these guys for stuffed animals! Apparently their favorite pass-time, besides eating eucalyptus is sleeping. I did manage to catch one in the act of eating... but before I could finish my sketch, he crashed out! Must take a lot of energy to eat all of those leaves.

After my time with the Koalas, I happened upon the New Guinea Singing Dog. This wild dog is apparently a distant relative of the dingo, and has been known to howl in harmony if they are in a group. He wasn't letting out a single tune for us, unfortunately. I guess he was waiting for the rest of the band...

Then it was time for the big cats. The San Diego Zoo has a wide variety of them, but the Black Jaguar captured me the most. Orson was extremely active for his old age - zipping all over his exhibit. I managed to get somewhat of an action "shot"... He was magnificent.

After spending time with a large carnivore, it was time to visit one of the zoo's most coveted exhibits - The Panda Bear. On loan from China, San Diego has 2 adult Pandas (Su Lin & Zhen Zhen), and one baby. This baby (Yun Zi) happens to weigh as much as my dog (45 lbs)... pretty big baby...! I was lucky enough to find a spot in the back corner where I could draw this adorable creature and still keep out of the way for the many people waiting in line. Zhen Zhen was enjoying her bamboo snack... so much so that by the end of the drawing she needed to lie down! (but continue to eat - of course!)

After my visit with the Panda Bear, the day started to get hot and the animals started to cool themselves down (by hiding out in the shade or in their pools). My last sketchbook entry was perhaps, the "coolest" of all the animals - The Orangutan. This female got such a kick out of watching the visitors, you would have thought WE were the exhibit. I'm sure all of us look hilarious with our paper cups and funny "fur"... What a gorgeous creature to end my visit with!

PET-A-PALOOZA Event

I am happy to report that my "Puppy Dog Tails" piece will be making an appearance at the Autobody Fine Art Gallery's benefit event - Dog Days 3 - Petapalooza.

There will be a signed print available for purchase, with the money going to the Alameda Animal Shelter and the Northern California German Shorthair Pointer Rescue.

The event takes place this Saturday, July 24, at the Gallery in Alameda at 1517 Park Street. It starts at 1 pm and goes well into the evening, ending at 9 pm. Bring yourself, your pooch, and your pocketbook in order to help homeless pets!

The Sketchbook Project

I'm very excited to announce that I will be participating in 2011 Sketchbook project hosted by The Brooklyn Art Museum and the Art House Co-op.

It's a really exciting opportunity to experiment, stretch my creative brain and skills, AND to put it all out there!! Each artist picks a theme for their sketchbook, and needs to abide by that theme. However, they are allowed to push and pull the concept in whatever way they chose. Then, starting in February of 2011, the community of sketchbooks will go on tour to seven major US cities. People are allowed to look at these books at their leisure during the exhibit, and the artist can put them up for sale if they want to.

Once the exhibit is over, the books are returned to the Brooklyn Art Library, where they will be a part of their permanent collection.

I have chosen the theme "Storybook." In addition to this theme, I have given myself some rules. The #1 rule I have given myself is that I am not allowed to work from sources - but the concepts should come strictly from my imagination. I'm hoping that as I carry the book around with me - I can create wherever and whenever the mood strikes! I'm also hoping to see some very unusual and fun styles perhaps emerge that are different from my traditional painting style.

The tour will start in Brooklyn, then travel to Austin, Portland, Atlanta, Chicago, (go homestead!!) Seattle, and lastly - San Francisco. Very appropriate!

At the Zoo...

One of my favorite sites at the zoo (besides the animals) are the kids watching the animals. I'll never forget this moment when a group of kids surrounded the grizzly bear. He was so close, right up on the glass... and the kids were just fascinated! The connection between these wild animals and children are the best.

Ripple Blog Update

Within 12 hours of "A Mother's Love" being posted on the Ripple Blog, it was sold!! A special thank you to Josephine Noah of Albany, CA for helping clean up the Gulf.

According the the IBRRC in Florida, it takes 3 bottles of Dawn Dishwashing Detergent to clean each bird. The $10 covers just the amount of those three bottles. I feel very proud that Josephine and I helped to heal at least one sea bird in trouble.

The Ripple Blog - Help the Wildlife in the Gulf Oil Spill

On Illustration Friday a few weeks ago the concept of RIPPLE was given, inspired by the Ripple Blog. This concept is the brainchild of established illustrator, Kelly Light, and is an incredible venue for illustrators and artists -- professional, student, and "hobbiest", of all ages, to create original artwork in order to help give relief to the disaster.

Due to my big move to the Peninsula, and the sprained ankle that came with it... I wasn't able to make the IF deadline, but Kelly still featured my piece as #660 - A Mother's Love. It is for sale for pennies - the $10 donation. Also, I plan on including some extra goodies for whomever intends on purchasing this piece.

Here is the concept in Kelly Light's words:

"It's hard to make ripples in oil soaked water. But throw enough stones and you will!

It's not about the politics or the corporation. It's about the animals. It's about not feeling helpless in the face of an overwhelming disaster. We're illustrators. We don't lose touch with that kid inside who marvels at the creatures who swim below and fly above the sea. We draw them. We are inspired by them. We need to help them.

The Ripple blog was started on the 45th day of the Deepwater Horizon Catastrophe. The oil spill in the Gulf is now over 50 days old with no sign of stopping. We may be too small as individuals to do some grand gesture- but together our small gestures can be grand....

These cards will be made available for a small donation of $10.00 to either The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies or The International Bird Rescue Research Center . I have no affiliation with them. NYC Zoos: Part Two-The Bronx Zoo

This past week I also took advantage of the fact that I was a mere subway ride away from the famous Bronx Zoo. What a treat! The weather was perfect, and the animals were extremely active and out for me to draw!

In the morning light I found another sleeping Polar Bear. I couldn't resist capturing his bliss while sleeping on such a seemingly uncomfortable surface. It reminded me a little of how my own dog will sometimes sleep on my shoes. I guess if you've never had a pillow, a rock will do just as fine!

I also spent some time in "Africa" and I stumbled upon the adorable Nyala. There was a whole herd not very far from the lion exhibit - so I don't blame them for being on their toes! (Of course they weren't aware of the large moat and fences protecting them...)

I also made a little friend at this exhibit. I got the feeling she was jealous of the South African Antelope getting her portrait done. Next time, Ms. Peacock!

I always love to spend time at the zoo with its supermodels, the Giraffes. I got the feeling they were waiting for their Mojitos to be brought to them on a tray. If they had a pool, they would have definitely be lying next to it - shades on and feet up.

I also got a special treat at the Gorilla exhibit. This one in particular was quite a character and loved to play tricks on his (or her) "guests." He would act very casual, meander near the glass, loose eye contact with you and look down, play with a little leaf or grass, then all of the sudden - BANG!! He would pummel himself against the glass and then run away!! (Laughing the whole time, I'm sure). He would always startle the newcomer and even get a few folks to let out a gasp or little startled scream! He was a riot...

Lastly, I spent time with the lions. I was so excited because they had cubs! The babies were only out until 1 PM (I suppose it was their nap time after that!) and, as you might have guessed, the exhibit was packed. Not really a square inch to plant myself in order to draw the little buggers. I did get some good shots of them...

The good part, was that after 1 PM, the exhibit was practically empty - with Mom and Dad still out and about. Dad made for a few fun sketches before it was time to go in for dinner...

Adventures in New York--The Central Park Zoo

Hello All! Well, last week was quite an adventure with my first work-related trip to New York. It proved to be very beneficial for numerous reasons. One being that I got to visit New York City's Zoos. First stop was the small, but fun, Central Park Zoo.

This Zoo only has about 5-6 exhibits, but it's a great little escape from the large metropolis for an hour or so.

They have a really fun sea lion exhibit and show, you would swear they were dogs with flippers. One of them even played fetch! They moved really fast so I just did a few gesture drawings before one of them dove right in front of me and splattered my sketchbook... :-)

I also spent some time with the Polar Bears. It was pretty hot that day, so I didn't blame them for spending their time in the water. I couldn't really get a good spot to draw the female who was hanging out really close to the glass for all of her fans!

But the male was crashed out in a less crowded area. If I didn't know they would eat me, I would love to give them a big hug...

Lastly I camped out with the new snow leopard exhibit. I was lucky enough to be standing next to a child that probably looked like a good snack, so I got a good stare down view.

It didn't last long however before she decided it was too hot to hunt.

All in all, I found the Central Park Zoo a fun little section of the park. It certainly doesn't hold any weight to most of the other zoos I frequent, but I loved seeing all of the city kids getting exposure to these beautiful exotic animals right in their own back yard...

The Cheshire Cat

Wedded Bliss! - A departure from the usual post

I'd like to take a brief moment to depart from the normal posts to announce my recent marriage to the love of my life! During the past months I've been feverishly planning my wedding in Chicago, while trying to maintain my creative juices. It became a reality on February 28th of this year.

It was an amazing evening. Full of so many friends and family that had nothing but love for myself and my new husband.

So if I've seem a little vacant with my postings lately, this is the reason. I would normally not use a venue like this to talk about a personal event, but being such a momentous occasion I want to share it with EVERYONE!

Not to mention an event like this couldn't happen without all of the amazing independent artists and entrepreneurs that supported every aspect of the evening. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the numerous creative individuals that were a part of this once in a lifetime evening.

My florist, Beth of Anna Held Florist, is a trained fine artist and painter from the Art Institute of Chicago. She brought the perfect amount of red hues in the flowers, accenting the bridal party colors and creating the warm atmosphere I wanted. This was further enhanced by the warmth of the glowing candlelight. We spoke the same language and it showed.

My photographer, Brian Kinyon, was the perfect ninja! His demeanor was calming and steady...at my side when I wanted a shot, and invisible capturing those amazing private moments when I didn't. I can't wait to see his pictures and I have full confidence they will be amazing. He was also the photographer at the wedding that I met Dave at...!

Mark, the owner and DJ from DJ-Chicago must have been a Stage Manager in a former life. He was on top of the schedule of events during the evening, consistently checking in with us and making sure all of our needs were met and we didn't forget a thing. Not being Jewish, he also offered me a great bit of advice when I told him my hesitation at being lifted in the chairs during the Horah. "Just lean back and you'll be fine." I did and I was! It was a blast...

"The Look" started with Pilar at Lilac Dress Boutique of Alameda who turned me onto Siri Designs and helped me to find the vintage/modern chic dress I was looking for. Kathy, her seamstress, did a great job turning this dress originally made for a "glamazon" into a short girl dress just for me!

Hair and Make-up! Antje Kastner of Tigerlilie Salon specializes in vintage hairstyles and she did an amazing job channeling my icons like Rita Hayworth and Kathryn Hepburn... and my make-up was done by good friend, Beth Nowak. She is an amazing make-up artist. Dave and I also met at HER wedding!

My custom made jewelry was crafted by Clarice of Happenstance Designs. She worked with me using my heirloom necklace as inspiration to create my headband and earrings. She also collaborated with me to create the bridesmaid jewelry featuring Murano Glass that was purchased in Venice!

I would thank the Academy, but what have they done for me lately?

Putting together this "one night only" show reminded me of my previous theatrical career, except in this instance as the bride you are designer, director and the star! It was truly a memorable evening and I'm so glad I was able to use so many independent artists to help create it... I know my new husband and I will never forget a moment of it.

Place Card Design

So I couldn't resist revisiting these spots that I had used in the past for my "Save-the-Dates." But I decided to add a bit of color to tie them into the rest of the decor of the wedding.

I went back to my old watercolor roots, and I think it worked out well. The texture of the watercolor has a lighter feel and works well with the delicate ambiance of candlelight.

I'm also adding this product to my etsy shop. I think it's great for an event like a wedding to use repeat images in several pieces in order to tie the event together. Being custom designed artwork it adds a special personal touch that helps bring all of the design elements together. It's those little extra magic touches that makes the evening unique and memorable.

So the past month has flown by and been filled with wedding planning galore. Here is the final illustration for my invitations. I've had such a blast designing my own artwork that it has inspired me to offer custom designed wedding invitations as a service for other couples. I'm hoping to have an etsy shop up soon!

Bedtime Stories Opening Reception

This Thursday was my Gallery opening for Bedtime Stories. It was a wonderful event. Staying with the theme of the show being focused on Children's Book Illustrations, I decided to make the event extra-kid friendly.

I started with making the hors devours based on kid food. This included candy corn, goldfish, finger peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, milk with cookies, and cupcakes (with a dog-theme decor).

In keeping with my Mattie Story, I also chose to make the event DOG FRIENDLY! We didn't have too many pooches stop by, but the few that did really made the place light up. Fellow dog artist, Barbara Pence, and her English Lab Puppy, Bailey, seemed to enjoy it...

Galleries can sometimes be a sterile place, and in order to contradict that atmosphere I decided to dress up the place. I chose a few items in order to create a happy and friendly setting for dogs and kids alike.

I also dressed up my promo-material table. I think all of the accesories made the whole room a much happier place.

The entire evening was full of friends and family showing their support, and I couldn't help but notice a few passerby's unable to resist popping in to see what all the fun was about. I was particularly excited to have my amazing models, Hazel and Lula, come by to see all the final artwork. I am so special and grateful that I met their generous mom who let me use her girls in order to realize my paintings. It was a thrill to have them there!

The show will be up until November 30, located at the 688 Sutter Street Gallery in San Francisco. Hours are 10 AM - 6 PM, Monday-Friday and 10 AM - 5 PM on Saturdays.

Bedtime Stories - Gallery Opening

So I've decided to do a show featuring my Mattie Story artwork and a few other pieces. The show is called, "Bedtime Stories" since it's all about Children's books. I'm sharing the space with another kid's book author and illustrator, so it should be fun.

I'm really excited to do this show! I'm hoping it'll be a good kick-start to trying to get my books published.

It will be at the 688 Gallery in San Francisco. The exact address is 688 Sutter Street. The show opens on a Thursday, November 5, at 5:30. The opening will last until around 7:00 pm that evening. The exhibit will be up until November 30 in case folks miss the opening.

Hope to see a lot of familiar faces there!!

Bedtime Puppy Love

I was never really happy with the original of this piece, and I've finally finished the re-do. I like this one a lot better, it's just a lot more solid than the original, with the same puppy-child tenderness. Hope folks like it!

Importance of Anatomy

One thing I've noticed is that the more knowledge I get about the way things work from the inside, the better they look from the outside.

This is especially true of anatomy. Check out this canine study I did of my own pooch. It's not super detailed, but enough so that my own brain can process where certain joints meet up, and how muscles wrap around those bones.

Pretty interesting stuff.

Elephants & Camels

Now that things have settled down a bit... I've decided to make more regular visits to the Oakland Zoo and keep my animal life drawing fresh. Today was a perfect zoo day. The weather was outstanding, and the place was practically empty! This made for calmer animals and more enjoyable drawing.

I spent time today focusing on elephants and camels. Usually the elephants hang back in their enclosure, but today they came right up to the fence. At one point it felt like I could pet them! I did a lot of sketching and did a final drawing with graphite and watercolor pencil. It was a lot of fun.

On my way out, I couldn't resist spending some time with the camels. I had tried to draw them several times during my class, but the space isn't very condusive to drawing due to the fact it's on a slope, no bences, and high fences so nowhere to lean you sketchpad. But today with the lower numbers and amazing weather, I just planted myself on the ground next to the female camel and drew away! It was a blast. Eventually I think she got tired of modeling though...

Dog Days of Summer-Mutt Lynch Winery Event

Good News! The Mutt Lynch Winery has decided to feature ALL of the finalists for the wine label contest at their fundraiser event coming up. There will be a signed and framed print for sale of CaberNOSE Merlot with all the proceeds donated to Healdsburg Animal Shelter. I am always excited to help homeless pets, so I jumped at the chance to be a part of this.

The event takes place on August 8-9 and it's only $10 for entry fee. Dogs enter free! Mattie and I plan on making an appearance on August 8th and I hope to see some familiar faces there. Info at Dog Days of Summer Event

Wine Label Contest

Dog Art Today announced a wine label contest for Mutt Lynch Winery about a month ago. I decided to take this opportunity to work on something a little different and fun for my portfolio. The wine it will be used for is a Meritage, which is a combination of Cabernet and Merlot. I call this painting, "CaberNOSE knows Merlot" A percentage of the wine sales will go to a local animal shelter.

Alice and the Cheshire Cat

This is my final of the Alice and the Cheshire Cat scene. I decided to run with a murkier day outside, instead of the sunny day I had originally planned. The happy bright sunshine just didn't fit with the mood of the cat. I'm enjoying using this new medium more and more. In this one, I used a lot more prismacolor and pastel to bring out the details. It was a lot of fun.

As my semester drew to a close, I found that I enjoyed the pastels a bit more each time.

Using this medium really forced me to think in a different way, a much more "painterly" style, if you will. I feel that it helped me with my illustrations a lot... and definitely had an impact on my improvement this semester. Here are a few of my final "faves"...

We had some great characters come in to model for us, everything from a Belly Dancer to a Psycho Clown/Drag Killer. Pretty fun stuff...

Alice and the Cheshire Cat

I had a concept to update Alice in Wonderland last semester in my Graphic Novel class, but due to time, I never felt like I could realize it fully. This semester with the help of my new animal anatomy knowledge, and the models I've found... I managed to recreate the first scene.

I wanted to make the cat a bit scarier, not the rolly polly image we're used to seeing in previous versions. I think it makes sense that Alice would really stop and listen to a cat this size! After all, talking animals at this point in the story don't really phase her anymore.

More Pastel Figures

In Bill's class we've continued to hone our pastel figure drawing skills... and as time goes on, I'm finding that I'm starting to enjoy it more each time I do it.

Here are some samples of the work we've been doing. We've moved on the clothed figure, and we've had some fun costumes to draw.

We even had a Charlie Chaplin impersonator come in (though he was a bit more portly than the original Charlie)

For the Chaplin drawing, I did a more monochromatic color scheme, concentrating on darks and lights, with a hint of color, but not too overpowering. I think it turned out okay!

I'm experimenting more and more with the medium...I find it layers really well, and I can get some cool effects with it. It's been fun and I've been learning a lot.

San Francisco Zoo

This past week we made our second trip to the San Francisco Zoo. I do enjoy this zoo a bit more than Oakland because it has a wider variety of animals, and because of the old school exhibits they are a lot easier to see. Of course it does make it a bit depressing, a bit too much concrete for my taste. And the weather, of course, is always far better in Oakland.

I spent the majority of my time with the big cats, drawing lions and tigers (and bears, oh my!) The lions made pretty good models, and two in particular... a father daughter team, were crashed out in plain sight. The big male was incredible, not only huge, but probably the most relaxed lion I've ever seen. A big cat grin on his face, hoping for someone to rub his belly...

The tigers were a bit more active, and seemed a little agitated. Word at the zoo is the tigers have never been the same since the Tatiana incident. Her presence is still strong in the air, with folks wondering which containment she was at. A tragic loss.

I DID actually spend some time with the bears as well... the Grizzley Bears were having a blast. I learned that these two were abandoned siblings, who were transfered to the zoo for breaking and entering! They would break into people's houses to steal food in order to survive. Pretty clever, though not a sight that I would want to see when coming home from work!

I also spent some time with the Polar Bears, too... though they didn't seem nearly as jovial as the grizzlies.

I ended the day with the Rhinoceros. I wasn't able to spend too long with him, partially because he was a bit hard to see, but mostly because the wind had picked up so much that my fingers were starting to freeze. Ah... San Francisco!

Another "Happening" at the Oakland Zoo

This week for Animal Life Drawing we made another trip to Oakland Zoo. The weather was amazing and the animals were out and about!

I spent most of my time working on the elephants and the giraffes. I found from my last week at San Francisco Zoo, that my sketchbook seems to improve if I concentrate on one particular animal for an extended amount of time, instead of trying to draw all of the animals that are out there. The elephants were pretty active, pacing around their exhibit and playing with their branches and other tidbits.

The second part of class I visited the giraffes. This was a lot of fun. The giraffes always seem to be hamming it up--like they know we're drawing them. They look at us with their huge eyes and bat their eyelashes at us as if to say, "Yes, I know I'm beautiful" The supermodels of the zoo, indeed.

I also tried a bit of watercolor this week as well, which proved to be a lot of fun. A great way to break up the day.

I did make a quick trip to the tiger, as well. Though he was pretty active today, and not into being a subject. When these cats get going, I love to just watch and observe. They are something else.

Pastel Figure Drawing

In one of my classes we are learning advanced figure drawing... but there is a twist to it... we are using pastels. Had I known this before taking the class, I'm not sure if I would have taken it on! This is probably one of the hardest classes I've taken. The medium is really tricky and unlike anything I've ever worked with. But once I stop thinking too hard, it starts to become fun.

We spent a few weeks on head drawing alone.

Super Models!

After much searching and seeking, I luckily happened upon the most fabulous pair of girls that are willing to model for me!

I've been told by many instructors that finding models is the way to go. It saves time in the long run, and you can get the exact pose you need. I happened to pop into work when the most outgoing six-year old I think I have ever met was selling girl scout cookies. Being a former girl scout, I couldn't resist buying a box, and started talking with the Brownie, whose name is Lula. I also came to find that she had an older sister, 8 years old, the perfect age for Kelly in my Mattie books!!

After talking to their super-hip mom (former Manhattenite) she agreed to let me use her girls for my illustrations. Hazel works so well with Mattie, it is like fate. She really is a natural with my pooch. The two of them are establishing a great relationship.

Lula was a perfect fit for Alice in Wonderland. I have a great piece featuring Alice and the Cheshire Cat that will be used for my Animal Life Drawing class, and also for my portfolio. She was a laugh riot to shoot! Lula was obviously a natural actress, and as we began to take photos, she continued to think of many things that Alice should be doing! She was great.

I'm so lucky to have found these girls! They are such a joy to be around, full of life and fun. I am always smiling after every shoot I schedule with them. Look at these faces! Wouldn't you??

A Trip to Monterey Aquarium

This week in Animal Life Drawing class, we had a bit of an adventure. Joe took us down to the Monterey Aquarium. I haven't been to an Aquarium since I was a kid, and it was hard to sit down and draw... the sea creatures were all so great to look at and explore...

I had a hard time deciding what was my favorite part. I spent quite a long time at the Penguin tank.. they are so great and full of life. A bit easier to draw than a lot of the fish who move so quickly. They did move quite a bit as well... but they were tons of fun to study.

I also had a good time at the deep sea tank... I loved studying the several types of shark (including the Hammerhead!) and the stingrays were pretty amazing as well.

My favorite room though, was the Jellyfish exhibit. I found these guys totally fascinating. I could have stared at their glowing tanks for hours, just watching them float around. Drawing them proved a bit difficult, because the room was practically pitch black in order to see their glowing bodies. Pretty cool stuff.

The biggest part of the adventure, however, was on the trip home...when our bus broke down about 20 minutes outside of San Francisco! Go Academy... spare no expense. Apparently, this was the second time this had happened in Joe's class. Makes me wonder if there is a conspiracy going on...? ;-)
